The story
Eighteen-year-old Maevie grew up inside the Compound, where drones dropped the rations and the speakers promised the Ascension: a single upload into a city of shimmering wonder, with no more sickness and no more bills. Her mother went first. On the day the pods opened, her father stepped inside, certain Maevie was right behind him. She wasn't. Now she hides in rotting motels and gutted malls, flinching at every scream, while the chip in her neck burns and the monsters close in.
Then she meets Arlo, a blond survivor with a crooked grin, crashing in an abandoned house, who swears he can get her to a pod. Trusting him means leaving the closet. It means fields of wildflowers and gunfire in the dark, an old man's farm behind a fence of traps, and a salt-bitten village built along a weathered pier. And with every mile closer to paradise, the static in Maevie's head grows louder.

The world
The story moves from the walled Compound and its patrol drones into the overgrown bones of abandoned suburbia: mildewed motels, gutted malls, a museum to the Ascension, and finally a salt-crusted village of scavenged shacks along a weathered pier. Under all of it hums the static.
